Skating Tips

How to change over your Roller Skate wheels

Depending on how you skate and distribute your body weight over the skate, the wheels may wear unevenly. In this case, for prolonged longevity you can rotate the wheels around the frame to spread the wear.

Rio-Wheel-change

To do this, undo the axles and swap the front right wheel of the right skate to the back left of the left skate, and so on. By changing the wheels diagonally, you get more use out of them before you need to buy new ones. The less worn areas will now be on the areas that you put more pressure on.

Re-tighten the axles after changing over the wheels

How to Stop

There are two main ways of stopping on quad skates which you should master

before going out on them…

One way, which is the most popular method of breaking is called the ‘T position’. This is carried out by placing the back foot at a 90º angle behind the heel of the front skate, in the shape of a T.

Try this in a stationary position first to test which foot you are most comfortable with. Press down evenly on the rear skate, increasing friction with the ground, which will slow you down.

TStop

The T Stop

Another way to stop on Quad Skates is to use the stoppers on the front of the skates. Don’t try to use both or you run the risk of falling forward. Again, after deciding which foot you are most comfortable with, extend your rear leg behind you and press down on the stopper gently, increasing the friction with the ground.

Both methods of stopping will take some practice, so be sure to try them out in a safe area, wearing all your safety gear.

Skating Safety

Recreational skating, like most physical activities, comes with risks. By wearing the right protective gear you can reduce the risk of injury. This gear should consist of a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads.

Here is our guide to reducing risk of injury and ensuring you look like a pro:

• Learn the skating basics such as speed control, braking and cornering before attempting to pull o more adventurous manoeuvres. Master the basics so that you look and feel condent! Don’t run before you can walk!

• Avoid hills and slopes unless you are highly skilled and wearing all your protective gear! Take it easy!

• Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. You don’t want to skate into someone or trip on an unsteady surface.

• You should try to avoid areas of heavy trac as chaos and congestion are hazardous and nerve-racking. You don’t want to be tense on your skates!

• Stay visible. Put on some fun, bright colours. Make sure people can see you clearly and avoid skating at night time.

• Skate only on smooth, dry surfaces where you are of no risk to yourself and those around you. Avoid skating through oil, water, sand and gravel. Not only are these surfaces unstable and likely to spoil your outt, but  they can also damage your wheel bearings. Stones and uneven surfaces can often ruin the wheel material.

• Never allow yourself to be pulled by vehicles whilst skating. Always obey traffic rules and signals.

• Skating is a super great way to have fun, exercise and keep fit, however, as with all sports it has it’s dangers. Common sense is your best form of protection when skating, so use it!

Skate Maintenance

Always keep your skates clean for safe, good looking and long lasting performance. Remove any grit or dirt from the chassis, frame, wheels and axles using a damp cloth.

Look After Your Skates

Do not use feet or stoppers to remove your skates by standing on the heel / back of the skate. This will cause wear and damage to the skate.

Take your skates off by untying the laces and loosening them enough to remove the skate with your hands.

Check Your Equipment

Before heading out on your roller skates, the following checks should be carried out:

• Turn the wheels to ensure that they rotate freely and the axles and bearings function correctly.

• Make sure all the nuts, screws and bolts are tight, clean and properly fitted.

• Components will wear out over time with use. In the event that you should require replacement parts, please contact us and we will be happy to guide.
